Does well: the free checker runs 16 checks on an uploaded PDF or DOCX and returns an ATS score with plain next steps. Paste a job description and it adjusts the resume toward the ad. The builder is quick and the templates are tidy.

Where it stops: the free plan gives you one resume and a TXT download only, so a usable PDF is paid. The templates are US-style resumes. It does run a New Zealand storefront, cvapp.nz, which is the same product in New Zealand dollars with the same template families and no checker in its navigation; Australia is not in its country selector, so Australians get the international site with local prices. Its privacy policy says it may use your personal data to develop its products, including AI features.

Grammarly: best for the last proofread, not the CV itself

Best for: catching the typo and the flat sentence after the CV is already right.

Does well: Grammarly is a writing checker first, and its Resume Builder is a feature inside that. Paste your resume, add the target job by description or link, and it returns an ATS score, a fit read against the role and "an enhanced version with tailored suggestions". It is free with a Grammarly account and lives in the tools people already have open.

Where it stops: it has no view of the market you are applying into and no rule about grounding. It is built to make writing read better, which is a different job from deciding what an Australian recruiter needs to see in the first skim. Its privacy policy states that it uses the information it collects to train its AI models, with a control in account settings to switch that off. If you use it on your CV, find that setting first.
